Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid conceded a whopping five (5) goals against Atletico Madrid in the La Liga 2025/26 match on Saturday afternoon.
Atletico Madrid came from the back to land a huge defeat on Real Madrid for the first time this season in an intense Madrid derby.
Robin le Normand’s header handed Diego Simeone’s Mattress Makers an early lead that was overturned by beautiful goals from French forward, Kylian Mbappe, and Turkish attacking midfielder, Arda Güler in the 25th and 36th minutes respectively.
But Alexander Sorloth returned parity to the game at 2-2 in stoppage time at the end of the first half.
Atletico Madrid then took charge of the showdown after the break with Julian Alvarez scoring the third in the 51st minute from the penalty spot.
Alvarez, former Manchester City Argentine forward, netted his second and fourth for the hosts in the 63rd minute, and Antoine Griezmann grabbed their fifth goal in the 3rd minute of additional time.
The result brought a run of seven successive victories across La Liga and the Uefa Champions League for Xabi Alonso’s side to an end.
All focus now turns to the Uefa Champions League 2025/26, with both sides in action on Tuesday, 1 October. Real Madrid take a trip to Kazakhstan to take on Kairat Almaty, while Atletico will welcome German side, Eintracht Frankfurt.
