NEC approves ₦3bn intervention fund for 36 States and FCT for ‘flood mitigation’

The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved the disbursement of ₦3 billion intervention fund to the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for “flood mitigation and response efforts” across the country.

The approval was given at the NEC 150th meeting on Thursday.

Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Zubaida Umar, who was invited to the MEC Meeting, described the intervention as “strategic and timely”.

Umar said, NEMA will not stop to work with State Governments, relevant Ministries, Agencies to ensure “well-coordinated, timely and swift flood response” across Nigeria.

Taking to X, Umar made known: “At the invitation of the National Economic Council (NEC) to its 150th meeting, NEMA shared insights into the current status of flood incidents across the country and presented our 2025 Flood Preparedness and Response Strategies in detail on Thursday.

“On the heels of this, we’re pleased to announce that the National Economic Council has directed the release of special intervention funds to the 36 states and the FCT, relevant Ministries and agencies to support flood mitigation and response efforts nationwide.

“The approved disbursements are as follows:

• N3 billion each to the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT);

• N1.5 billion to the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning;

• N1.5 billion to the Federal Ministry of Environment;

• N1.5 billion to the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation; and

• N10 billion to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

“This intervention is not only strategic but also timely. It also demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration to safeguarding the lives and property of the citizens.

“However, all hands need to be on deck. Underscoring the fact that disaster preparedness is not an optional but a shared mandate across all levels of governance, NEMA urged the State Governments to fully strengthen SEMAs, operationalize LEMCs while also enforcing physical planning laws and building code compliance.

“NEMA will continue to work closely with State Governments, relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), Local Emergency Management Councils (LEMCs), and relevant stakeholders to ensure a well-coordinated, timely, and swift flood response across the nation.”
