Brighton and Hove Albion came from the back to defeat Manchester City 2-1 at the American Express Community Stadium in the Premier League 2025/26 match on Sunday 31 August, 2025.
Omar Marmoush’s assist was well converted by Norwegian striker, Erling Haaland, to place Pep Guardiola’s side in front in the 34th minute, but, former Liverpool midfielder, James Milner, levelled for the Seagulls in the 67th minute from the penalty spot.
K. Mitoma provided for B. Gruda who netted late, in the 89th minute, for Brighton, who finished the highly City-dominated encounter as winners.
Speaking to SkySports, James Milner, who copied late former Liverpool teammates, Diogo Jota’s celebration after levelling for Brighton, said: “Obviously Jots meant so much to everyone. It is an honour to wear his number this season. I have seen him doing it [the celebration] and it was probably a bad impression by me.”
On his penalty and the win, Milner said: “Unfortunately we have the international break. We’d have liked to have carried on the momentum. The boys did a good job at keeping it to 1-0 [when I came on]. I was trying to stay calm [for the penalty] and I have taken penalties before when I have come off the bench. it’s not the easiest thing but I hope my years of experience helped.”
