On World Refugee Day 2025, today, Friday 20 June, 2025, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Amina Mohammed, met with Sudanese families in Chad “fleeing unimaginable violence”.
She said, “no one chooses to be a refugee.”
The fighting in Sudan between two rival factions of the military government of Sudan, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF)and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), started in April, 2023, and since then tens of thousands have been killed in the country.
Hundreds of thousands have fled the country, and millions are facing severe hunger.
Taking to her official X account, Amina Mohammed wrote: “No one chooses to be a refugee.
“In Chad, I met Sudanese families fleeing unimaginable violence — and communities that welcomed them with grace.
“This #WorldRefugeeDay, solidarity means standing with refugees — and with those who open their doors and hearts.”
Themed ‘Solidarity With Refugees’, according to un.org: “World Refugee Day 2025 is a powerful call to action and empathy in a time of global uncertainty.
“With record numbers of people forcibly displaced and humanitarian aid under threat, this year’s theme—”Solidarity with Refugees”—urges us to move beyond words and take meaningful steps to support those forced to flee.
“Refugees seek not charity, but opportunity: a chance to rebuild their lives, contribute to their communities, and live with dignity.
“This World Refugee Day is a moment to honor their courage and resilience, listen to their stories, and advocate for lasting solutions to displacement. It reminds us that welcoming refugees strengthens societies, fosters innovation, and builds communities where everyone belongs.
“Through collective action—from policy change and community engagement to sharing refugee voices—we affirm that refugees are not forgotten, not alone, and not without hope.”
