‘I was the only odd man out’ – Reno Omokri tells his story on a British Airways flight to Nairobi

Reno Omokri took to his official X account (@renoomokri) and narrated: “I was on a British Airways flight to Nairobi and was rather disappointed that in a plane full of Black Africans, not one of them was wearing traditional African clothes. All of them dressed in Western apparel. I was the only odd man out on the entire flight, being the only African dressed in native African fabrics and fashion.

“And the funny thing is that all these my brothers were giving me the side eye as if their Western clothing somehow made them superior. The women, on the other hand, gave me the glad eye, for which I am grateful. The charade continued until I got on the plane and turned left for Business Class (there was no First Class, which is my preferred class), and each and every one of them turned right for economy except one.

“As Africans, we must make a conscious and very deliberate effort to project pride in our Africanness. The only way this can be done is to bear African names and dress as Africans. It is always better to be an original than a copy. No matter how much you try to Westernise yourself, you cannot erase your race, ethnicity, and history. And why should you even want to? Being an African is so cool. I go everywhere on Earth dressed as an African. I have been received by two British Prime Ministers and spoken at the U.S. Congress as a proud African in my African traditional clothes. Westernise respect you more when you are proud of your heritage.

“If you are a Kenyan or Tanzanian (I am currently in Tanzania) and you like my Aso Oke and Borno cap and would like one for free, please comment under the post. I want to gift a couple to my African brothers so we can all be proud of being Black Africans together.

“Love from me to you.”
