The Delta State Athletes, AKA, Team Delta, emerged Winners of the 22nd National Sports Festival which held in Ogun State.
The National Sports Festival 2024, tagged, Gateway Games 2024, kicked off on 16 May and concluded today, Friday 30 May, 2025; it had more than 14,000 athletes compete in different Sporting events.
Team Delta finished with a total of 337 medals – 126 Gold, 100 Silver and 111 Bronze.
This makes it Delta State’s fifth win successively and ninth overall.
The Delta State Government described this achievement as “a remarkable feat that reflects the talent, discipline, and resilience of Delta athletes.”
Through initiatives like “the ongoing reconstruction of the Warri City Stadium into a world-class facility, grassroots talent discovery programmes, and school competitions”, the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori sees Sports development as a “top priority”.
In its congratulatory message to Team Delta, the Delta State Government wrote: “Congratulations to Team Delta on your exceptional victory at the 22nd National Sports Festival – Gateway Games, Ogun 2024. With 126 gold, 100 silver, and 111 bronze medals, this outstanding performance marks Delta State’s ninth overall win and fifth consecutive title — a remarkable feat that reflects the talent, discipline, and resilience of Delta athletes.
“Under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s leadership, sports development has remained a top priority. Through initiatives such as the ongoing reconstruction of the Warri City Stadium into a world-class facility, grassroots talent discovery programmes, and school competitions, his administration continues to strengthen Delta State’s position as Nigeria’s unrivalled sports powerhouse.”
In his speech at the closing ceremony of the Gateway Games 2024, Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, said, “this is not just the end of a festival, it is the beginning of a new era of sports development in Ogun State.”
At the closing ceremony several artist were invited to perform, including, Wande Coal, Waje, KWAM 1 among others.
