Real Madrid German defender, Antonio Rudiger could face a lengthy ban after appearing to throw ice at the referee in the aftermath of Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey final loss by Barcelona.
Barcelona discomfited Real Madrid 3-2 in the final in Seville on Saturday 26 April, 2025 to emerge new Copa Del Rey Kings.
Jules Kounde netted the winner late in extra time, in the 116th minute, to hand Barcelona the victory over rivals Real Madrid at Seville’s La Cartuja stadium.
After the final whistle, Rudiger and Lucas Vazquez, both on the bench after being substituted earlier, bagged red cards from referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoechea for dissent from the sidelines, while Jude Bellingham was also sent off for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The match report from referee De Burgos stated that Rudiger “threw an object from the coaching area that didn’t reach me,” adding that the Madrid defender displayed “an aggressive attitude.”
Rudiger was held back by Madrid players and staff while he had a small bag of ice in his hand and didn’t stop shouting at De Burgos.
The Germany international has since tendered an apology on social media over his behaviour.
