United States: President Trump signs executive orders and memos on day 1

Newly inaugurated President of the United States (US), Donald Trump, has signed approximately 200 executive orders, memoranda and proclamations on his first day in office.

The move puts to action his “America first” policies.

See below:

  1. Cabinet Appointments: After his inauguration, Trump signed his first documents at the Capitol which established Cabinet and subcabinet appointments, acting leaders of departments and agencies and a proclamation that flags are to be flown at full staff on inauguration days. After the passing of 39th US President, Jimmy Carter, flags have been flying at half staff.
  2. Clemency for Jan. 6 offenders and defendants: Trump signed a full pardon for about 1,500 people involved in the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol assault at the Oval Office, White House 
  3. Extension of TikTok law enforcement date: Trump signed an executive order on the night of Monday telling the Department of Justice not to enforce for 75 days a law that places a ban on TikTok effectively
  4. Federal workers ordered to return to work full-time in person: Trump has signed an order requiring Federal workers return to full-time work in person immediately, a freeze on all federal hiring, except by the military and some other excluded categories
  5. America’s withdrawal from Paris Climate Agreement: Trump has also signed an executive order which pulls out the United States (US) from the Paris Climate Agreement. The US President claimed America would save a trillion dollars by leaving the agreement
  6. America’s withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO): Trump signed an executive order withdrawing the US from WHO. Also, he ordered the Federal Government to retire freedom of speech and prevent government censorship moving forward.
  7. Immigration and Border executive orders: The President launched a serious crackdown on immigration, and tasked the military with border enforcement. Trump instructed officials to begin construction of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
  8. Birthright citizenship: Trump also moved to take down the longstanding interpretation of the 14th Amendment, signing an order to federal agencies to deny birthright citizenship to children of parents who are temporary visa holders or unauthorized immigrants.
  9. Death penalty for unauthorized immigrants who murder law enforcement agents: The Department of Justice has been directed by Trump to seek the death penalty for unauthorized immigrants who commit capital crimes or murder law enforcement officers
  10. Executive orders with focus on the economy: Trump’s executive orders which have to do with energy production and the economy are focused on cutting regulations criticized as red tape. The President also signed an executive order targeted specifically on Alaskan economic and energy production
  11. Gender and diversity orders: On his first day, Trump addressed some of his campaign promises related to gender “wokeness” and programs related to diversity, equity and inclusion. Executive orders made it a policy to the Federal Government to take into recognition two sexes that cannot be altered: Male and Female
Donald Trump alongside his running mate, JD Vance were sworn in as President and Vice President of the United States (US) respectively on Monday 20 January, 2025.
