Jimmy Carter Passes At 100: US Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos to close in honour of former US President

On Thursday 9 January, 2025, the United States (US) Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed in honour of former US President, Jimmy Carter’s passing.

Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the US, passed on Sunday 29 December, 2024 in his home in Plains, Georgia “surrounded by his family”.

According to U.S. Mission Nigeria: “The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Thursday, January 9, 2025 in honor of former President Carter’s passing.


We remember former President Jimmy Carter, a tireless advocate for peace, democracy, and human rights. As the first U.S. President to visit Nigeria, he strengthened U.S.-Nigeria relations and supported Nigeria’s democratic process. His legacy continues to inspire us.”
