‘They hate it when you use your legal training to confront the corrupt system’ – Inibehe Effiong

Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, wrote: “Their definition of “a real lawyer” is one that makes excuses for the establishment, and relies on legal technicalities to defend the atrocities of corrupt politicians.

“They want a lawyer who will constantly look for ways to justify bad governance.

A “real lawyer” for them is one who has no interest in changing the society.

They want you to go to court, handle your cases quietly, make money, and not bother about how bad the country is.

They hate it when you use your legal training to confront the corrupt system.

Sapara Williams, Nigeria’s first indigenous lawyer, rightly admonished that “a lawyer lives for direction of his people and for the advancement of the cause of his country”. Some of us are following this path and we owe no one apology.”
