The Governor disclosed, “the devastation was immense, yet I thank God that no lives were lost in the incident”, and made a pledge “to work tirelessly to rally the necessary support for the affected traders and to remodel the market”.
According to Governor Mutfwang: “On Monday, I visited the Katako Market in Jos North Local Government Area, which was tragically ravaged by a fire outbreak on Sunday night. The devastation was immense, yet I thank God that no lives were lost in the incident. My heartfelt sympathies go out to those injured and to the traders who lost their properties and livelihoods.
During my visit, I pledged to work tirelessly to rally the necessary support for the affected traders and to remodel the market. My goal is to transform Katako into a functional, safer, and thriving business hub that benefits not just the traders but also the entire Plateau State economy.
This fire marks yet another painful chapter in the history of Katako Market, which has endured recurring fire incidents over its 40 years of existence. It is deeply disheartening that such destruction persists, especially during these challenging economic times for our people.
For the first time in the market’s history, a serving governor has personally inspected its condition, underscoring my administration’s commitment to addressing the pressing needs of Plateau’s people. I am resolved to ensure this market receives the attention it has long been denied.
I commend the swift response of security agencies, the fire service, and selfless individuals who helped contain the fire and reduce its spread. However, it is clear that we must take proactive steps to prevent future occurrences. Working in collaboration with the local government and market leadership, we will develop a comprehensive plan to revitalize and expand the market. This includes improving its layout, providing firefighting equipment, and ensuring adequate water supply.
In line with our broader vision for Plateau State, I am also committed to unveiling plans for remodeling other key markets, including Terminus Market. These efforts aim to reduce congestion, enhance accessibility, and provide a conducive environment where traders can thrive.
Our vision is clear: a Plateau where markets are not just places of trade but centers of economic growth and prosperity. I remain confident that the people will find these plans progressive and beneficial, and I pray for God’s continued grace as we work towards better days ahead.
Let us stand together as a community to rebuild Katako Market and ensure a brighter future for all.”
