He said, the move will bring about “devastating consequences for Palestine refugees.”

Guterres added, “there is no alternative to UNRWA” as he put forth the “matter to the attention of the UN General Assembly”.

The fighting between Israel and Hamas continues to intensify; it started after Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel in the early hours of Saturday 7 October, 2023, killing more than 1,000 Israelis and taking many others hostage.

According to Spox of Israel Defence Forces (IDF), Daniel Hagari, there are still “101 hostages in Gaza” being held by Hamas.

Israel has said, all the hostages must be returned home and will do it “by any means”.

According to Guterres: “If implemented, the laws adopted today by the Knesset of Israel would likely prevent @UNRWA from continuing its essential work in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, with devastating consequences for Palestine refugees.

I call on Israel to act consistently with its obligations under the Charter of the @UN & international law. National legislation cannot alter those obligations.

I am bringing this matter to the attention of the UN General Assembly, and will keep the Assembly closely informed as the situation develops.

There is no alternative to UNRWA.”
