Rebecca Cheptegei: My daughter was a ‘good and polite child’ – Mother

A heavy hearted mother of Ugandan Olympic marathoner has described her daughter, Rebecca Cheptegei, as “a good and polite child”.

Rebecca Cheptegei died on Thursday 5 September, 2024 from injuries she sustained from a “domestic violence” incident from her boyfriend in Kenya.

The 33-year old’s boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, poured petrol on her and set her on fire, she was taken to hospital with 75% burns on her body.

According to VOA Africa: “The heartbroken mother of Ugandan Olympic marathon runner Rebecca Chetegei, 33, who tragically died on Thursday after she was set ablaze by someone her family described as an ex-boyfriend, says her daughter was a “good and polite child.””

The Uganda Athletics Federation has called on the governments of Uganda and Kenya for justice for Rebecca Cheptegei following the unfortunate incident, while announcing the sad news of the demise of the athlete.

Cheptegei represented Uganda at the Paris 2024; it was the first time she appeared in the Olympics.
