‘The Eye Of West Africa’ – ECOWAS to build new headquarters building in Abuja

The Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) plans to build a new headquarters building known as ‘The Eye Of West Africa’ along Airport Road in Abuja, Nigeria.

The structure will be built “with a grant from the People’s Republic of China through the China International Development Cooperation Agency (China Aid)”.

According to ecowas.int:

The ECOWAS Ad-Hoc Ministerial Committee on the Construction of Community Institutions Headquarters meets on the sidelines of the Council of Ministers meeting on 5 July 2024, at the construction site of the New ECOWAS Headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria, to consider the report of the Committee’s Experts’ Meeting and assess the progress of work on site.

The new ECOWAS headquarters building, known as “The Eye of West Africa”, along Airport Road in Abuja, is being built with a grant from the People’s Republic of China through the China International Development Cooperation Agency (China Aid).

Welcoming the participants, His Excellency Damtien L. Tchintchibidja, Vice-President of the ECOWAS Commission, expressed the appreciation of the ECOWAS institutions to the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the land provided, the customs duty exemptions granted, the construction permits facilitated and all other support for the commencement of the construction of the new ECOWAS headquarters.

The Vice-President also thanked His Excellency XI Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, and the Government of China for China’s assistance project for the construction of the ECOWAS headquarters as a way of supporting the ECOWAS community. “This gesture represents a milestone in the ongoing cooperation between the People’s Republic of China and ECOWAS.
