Thirteen (13) Brazilian sharpnose sharks from the shores of Rio Del Janeiro were tested by Marine biologists.
The test, carried out by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, found high levels of cocaine in their muscles and livers; the concentrations were as much as 100 times more than previously reported for other aquatic creatures.
Experts are of the belief, the cocaine is making its way into the water through illegal labs where the drug is manufactured or via solid wastes of drug users.
Further research is needed to establish whether the cocaine is changing the behaviour of the sharks.
