AFCON 2023: Nigeria 4(1)-(1)2 South Africa – ‘We promise to reward your commitment and dedication’ – VP Shettima

Vice President, Kashim Shettima, told the players and officials that, “the Federal government has promised to reward the Super Eagles for their commitment and dedication in reaching the Final” of the 2023 CAF Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON).

In the semi final, Nigeria progressed to the final of the tournament after beating South Africa in a penalty shootout 4-2 following a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes.

William Troost-Ekong placed Nigeria ahead in the 67th minute from the penalty spot, but, South Africa levelled in the 90th minute from the penalty spot through Teboho Mokoena.

According to the Super Eagles: “The Federal Govt has promised to reward the Super Eagles for their commitment and dedication in reaching the Final of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in CIV.


“Vice President Kashim Shettima told the players and their officials in the dressing room, following their hard-fought victory over South Africa in the semi finals on Wednesday, that the govt and people of Nigeria are proud of their accomplishment.


“The VP was in company with Governors Dapo Abiodun (Ogun) and Duoye Diri (Bayelsa), Minister for Youth, Dr. Jamila Ibrahim as well as Oil mogul Wale Tinubu, FIFA Council Member Amaju Pinnick and NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau.”

Nigeria will play against host nation, Ivory Coast, in the final of the AFCON 2023 on Sunday 11 February, 2024; the Elephants defeated the Leopards of DR Congo in the semi final by a lone goal on Wednesday 7 February, 2024.
