Erik Ten Hag’s side fell by three goals to one to the Seagulls as Welbeck opened scoring for Roberto de Zerbi’s side in the 20th minute.

Pascal Gross and Joao Pedro made it two and three for the visitors in the 53rd and 71st minutes respectively.

Rasmus Hojlund’s goal for Manchester United in the 40th minute was cancelled by VAR.

Substitute Hannibal Mejbri netted United’s consolation in the 73rd minute as the hosts suffer their fourth consecutive top flight loss in the hands of Brighton.

In his post-match comments, Brighton manager, Roberto de Zerbi said: “I know I am very lucky to be the coach of this team. It’s like a dream.”
