The words to the Lord’s Prayer were given to us by our Lord and personal saviour, Jesus Christ, Himself.

The Lord’s Prayer: “Lord, teach us to pray…” – Matthew 6:9-13 |
The Lord’s Prayer can be found in the books of Matthew and Luke – Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:1-4.
How the Lord’s Prayer came about was, in Luke 11:1, where “one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray”, and Jesus went ahead to teach his disciples how to pray.
The Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6:9-13 – “After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”
Before Jesus gave his disciples the Lord’s Prayer, He told them to avoid “repetition” in their prayers. In Matthew 6:7, Jesus says “But when you pray, use not vain repetitions”. This simply means, repeating words in prayer is not necessary because God already knows our need, before we ask Him.
Matthew 6:8 – “Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.”
The Lord’s Prayer is a beautifully and powerfully complete prayer and can be prayed in less than a minute.
Jesus has taken his time to make the Lord’s Prayer what it truly is – simple but powerful, and filled with seven (7) petitions in it.
The Lord’s Prayer opens with an acknowledgement of God, as the Supreme Being who lives in Heaven – “Our Father which art in heaven”.
This opening part of the Lord’s Prayer is so powerful that it unites Christians all over the world into one body of worshippers, and from there, the petitions begin.
