The population of Scottish wildcats is on the edge of extinction with most wild-living cats now hybrids, as disclosed by a new research.

Led by NatureScot, the five-year project, came out with a conclusion there are too few wildcats in the country for the population to be viable.
It revealed hybridisation – wildcats breeding with domestic or feral cats was a big threat to the species.
Other risks identified are disease and habitat loss.
