Earthquake in Turkey: 5.6 magnitude disaster hit eastern region

Eastern Turkey has been struck by a 5.6 magnitude earthquake, resulting to the death of one person and several others sustaining injuries.

Some damaged properties were also reported to have collapsed.

The unfortunate incident on Monday has become the latest major tremor to hit Turkey as the country rebuilds from earlier massive quakes that claimed more than 50,000 lives in Turkey and Syria.

Earlier, on Monday 6 February, 2023, Southern Turkey and Northern Syria were struck by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake.

The latest disaster occurred in the town of Yesilyurt in Malatya province, the country’s disaster management agency (AFAD) said, further revealing that one person was killed after the collapse of a factory in Kahramanmaras.

Kahramanmaras is the epicenter where the 7.8 magnitude happened.

According to AFAD, almost 10,000 aftershocks have been reported since Monday 6 February, 2023 when the 7.8 magnitude struck.
