The US General also estimated  “same thing probably on the Ukrainian side”.

Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen Mark Milley, also has the suggestion that civilians who have died after being caught up in the battle, should be around 40,000.

These estimates are the highest being released yet by a western official.

He also said that signs that Kyiv was willing to re-start talks with Moscow offered a “window” for negotiations.

Gen Milley, speaking in New York City, further said, that for the success of any talks, there will be the need for both Russia and Ukraine to reach a “mutual recognition” that a wartime victory “is maybe not achievable through military means, and therefore you need to turn to other means”.

Gen Milley disclosed, “You’re looking at well over 100,000 Russian soldiers killed and wounded.

“Same thing probably on the Ukrainian side.”
