Algeria Forest Fires: At least 26 dead – Interior Minister

Forest fires have ruined northern Algeria and resulted in the loss of at least 26 lives with several more suffering various degrees of injuries.

Algeria’s Interior Minister, Kamel Beldjoud, disclosed, 24 died in El Tarf, close to the border with Tunisia, alongside a mother and her daughter in Setif.

Supported by helicopters, firefighters were still battling to contain fires on Wednesday evening.

According to reports, some 350 residents have been successfully evacuated in different provinces.

The civil protection agency has said that El Tarf was the worst hit area with 16 fires in progress.

Officials have revealed that flames have reached several homes and villages.

The names of the 58-year old mother and her 36-year old daughter who died in Setif are yet to be known
