Manchester City emerged winners in a tough Carabao Cup match right inside the Etihad Stadium as Nathan Ake’s first goal since April finally helped the Citizens discomfit holders Liverpool.
Pep Guardiola’s side took the lead three times, however, on the first two occasions, the Reds found their way back.
In the second occasion, it took Mohamed Salah just one minute to level for Liverpool after Riyad Mahrez netted the second for the hosts.
Erling Braut Haaland opened scoring for Man City early in the 10th minute, his 24th goal of the season. Fabio Carvalho levelled for the visitors in the 20th minute.
In the 58th minute, Nathan Ake sealed victory for the Citizens with the third goal to help Manchester City reach the quarter finals of the tournament.
Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, in his post-match comments, said: “After a long time of not playing. Both teams were incredible with high level intensity. [On Rico Lewis] the way he played with and without the ball, we are lucky to have this player for the next decade.”
