SSC Napoli last won the Serie A title back in 1990 and the Diego Armando Maradona era.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said, “it’s always a moment of pride for me to see young people from our city achieving great things”.

Osimhen was very pivotal in Napoli’s winning of the Serie A 2022/23 title – his leveller earned the Partenopei the one point required to win the Scudetto.

The Nigerian sharpshooter levelled for Luciano Spalletti’s side after Udinese had earlier gone in front.

It’s been celebration galore in the city of Naples since Napoli emerged Champions of Italy.

Sanwo-Olu congratulated Osimhen for “blazing the trail in the Serie A goal scoring charts, leading your team to the league title as well as breaking George Weah’s record as the highest scoring African in the league.”

The Governor said: “So many stories begin in Lagos and it’s always a moment of pride for me to see young people from our city achieving great things.

“A big congratulations to Victor Osimhen on blazing the trail in the Serie A goal scoring charts, leading your team to the league title as well as breaking George Weah’s record as the highest scoring African in the league.

“As someone who talks about his humble roots in Lagos and continues to give back in amazing ways, we say keep flying the flag of Nigeria high with your impressive performances for Napoli.

“I look forward to working together soon to take football in Lagos to greater heights.”
