England thrashed China 6-1 in a statement win at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup to secure their spot in the last 16 as Group D winners.

The Lionesses got off to a fantastic start in Adelaide, opening the scoring after the ball fell to Alessia Russo, who drilled a low shot into the bottom corner.

Sarina Wiegman’s side doubled their advantaged just before the half-hour mark, and it was three before the interval when James got on the scoresheet.

China came out with more intent after the break, Wang Shuang slotted her effort past Earps, marking the first time the England had conceded in the tournament.

James put England 4-1 ahead with another superb goal.

Chloe Kelly poked home into an empty net after catastrophic defending from China.

Rachel Daly put the icing on top of England’s cake, smashing home a late sixth, with the victory setting up a last 16 clash against Group B’s surprise runners-up, Nigeria.90min
