The Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) has released a press statement on charges against the democratically elected President of the West African country, Mohamed Bazoum.

The Military Junta in Niger has earlier released a statement where they made know their intention to prosecute President Mohamed Bazoum for “high treason” and “undermining security of the country”.
A part of the statement released by ECOWAS on charges against President Bazoum, reads, “ECOWAS condemns this move” and went ahead to describe it as “another form of provocation”.
The ECOWAS press statement reads: “ECOWAS has learnt with stupefaction attempts to bring charges of high treason against H.E. Mohamed BAZOUM, President of the Republic of Niger.
“ECOWAS condemns this move as it represents yet another form of provocation and contradicts the reported willingness of the military authorities in the Republic of Niger to restore constitutional order through peaceful means.
“President BAZOUM remains the democratically elected President of the Republic of Niger recognized by ECOWAS and the international community. ECOWAS condemns his illegal detention and calls for his immediate release and reinstatement.”
