The fighting between Hamas and Israel continues, after Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel in the early hours of Saturday 7 October, 2023, killing hundreds of Israelis and taking several others hostage.

Von der Leyen also conveyed her “deepest condolences” to President Abbas as well as families of those who have lost innocent lives in the fighting between Hamas and Israel, adding, a “two-state solution” will put an end to the fighting and install peace in the region.

Ursula von der Leyen said: “These are very difficult times for the Palestinian people who have been betrayed by Hamas, I told President Abbas on the phone.

“I conveyed to him and to the families of those who have lost innocent lives my deepest condolences.

“I made clear that, in its legitimate efforts to fight Hamas terrorists, Israel must seek to protect civilian lives and respect international humanitarian law.

“The EU is working with partners to attend to the humanitarian needs of vulnerable Palestinians.

“It is vital to prevent broader regional escalation and spill-over.

“The @EU_Commission will support all efforts to find a lasting solution towards peace, based on a two-state solution.”

Few days back, the European Commission President was in a meeting with President of the United States (US), Joe Biden, where they reached an agreement to take a stand together on the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East.
