UNGA 79: ‘In the face of gender-based discrimination and oppr*ssion, Afghan women show remarkable courage in demanding their rights’ – Guterres

At the 79th session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres, said, “the @UN stands in solidarity with Afghan women who show remarkable courage in demanding and pursuing their rights in the face of gender-based discrimination and oppression.”

The UN Chief added, “We will never allow gender-based discrimination to become normalized anywhere in the world.”

According to Guterres: “Without educated women,


without women in employment, including in leadership roles,


without recognizing the rights and freedoms of one-half of its population,


Afghanistan will never take its rightful place on the global stage.


“In the face of gender-based discrimination and oppression, Afghan women show remarkable courage in demanding and pursuing their rights.


The @UN stands in solidarity with them.


We will never allow gender-based discrimination to become normalized anywhere in the world.”

#UNGA79 is ongoing in New York, US and will conclude on Monday 30 September, 2024.
