US judge order Google to open app store to rivals

Google must allow Android apps created by rival technology firms onto its Google Play Store for three (3) years beginning next month, a US Federal Judge has ruled.

The move was among other remedies ordered by Judge James Donato in a case brought against Google by Epic Games.

Google said, it will appeal against the decision as well as request for a temporary stop to the proposed remedies.

Some legal experts have praised the ruling as a significant challenge to the dominance of a handful of tech giants.

Rebecca Haw Allensworth, professor at Vanderbilt Law School, said: “It shows that courts are not necessarily opposed to asking dominant platforms to share access with rivals in the name of competition.”
