Liverpool 2-1 Atletico Madrid: Narrow comeback win for Iraola’s Reds

A fine strike from Argentine midfielder, Alexis Mac Allister, sealed a 2-1 comeback victory for Liverpool in the League Phase match of the Uefa Champions League 2026/27 against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday 9 September, 2026 at Anfield.

Bradley Barcola made his first start for Andoni Iraola’s Reds, however, felt something in his calf and was substituted in the second half after throwing away three (3) clean chances which could have marked the occasion with a goal.

The Mattress Makers had gone in front through Marcos Llorente in the 17th minute with Julian Alvarez’s assist, however, the home side fought and parity was restored in the 40th minute after Dominik Szoboszlai converted Ronald Araujo’s assist cleverly.

And, just five (5) minutes into the second half, Mac Allister scored Liverpool’s second to hand Spanish manager, Iraola, his first Champions League victory as head coach of the Reds.

On the other sides, reigning Kings of Europe, Paris Saint-Germaine (PSG) cruised through Slovan Bratislava 6-1, and Arsenal carted home maximum points after defeating SSC Napoli 1-0 in Naples.

Victor Osimhen’s Galatasaray were downed on Tuesday night 1-3 by Sporting CP in Portugal. The Nigerian striker was missing in action for the Turkish Kings due to muscle injury.
