First batch of pilgrims depart Gateway International Airport to Saudi Arabia for 2026 Hajj

On Sunday 3 May, 2026, the first batch of pilgrims departed from Gateway International Airport in Iperu, Ogun State, directly to Saudi Arabia for the 2026 Hajj.

This was made known by Dapo Abiodun, Executive Governor of Ogun State. The Governor offered prayers, as well as, words of encouragement as the pilgrims departed to the Asian country for the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca.

Via X, Abiodun described the moment as “truly historic”, saying, the “pilgrims are not only the first set to depart from Gateway International Airport to Saudi Arabia, but also the very first passengers to travel internationally from the airport”.

The pilgrims boarded the “largest aircraft” to have ever landed on the Gateway International Airport runway. It shows the Airport is thriving in “capacity and global standard”.

Governor Abiodun said: “We also noted with pride that they boarded the largest aircraft ever to land on our runway, reflecting the airport’s growing capacity and global standard.

“We emphasized that this milestone goes beyond travel. It represents the manifestation of sacrifice, vision, and sustained commitment.”

Abiodun said, the direct pathways to Medina, Saudi Arabia will bring about “greater opportunities” for every citizen of Ogun State.

This development also reaffirms the State’s “vision of positioning the Gateway International Airport as a major hub for international travel and pilgrimage operations in the Southwest region”, the Governor said.
