Peter Obi, 2023 Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), said, the time has come for all “opposition forces” to ignore their “differences” and collaborate in “unity of purpose”.

Obi made the statement after making his way back to Kano State on the invitation of his “brother” and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The former Governor of Anambra State said on X, Kwankwaso’s decision to join the Coalition Party “marks yet another significant step in the collective effort to rescue and rebuild our democracy and dear nation, Nigeria”.

He further said: “As I have consistently maintained, this is the time for all opposition forces and well-meaning Nigerians to set aside their differences and work together in unity of purpose.”

Obi described the stage at which the country is as “critical”, and said, it will require “sacrifice and courage” from all Nigerians, as he listed “economic hardship and insecurity” as few of the challenges Nigerians are battling with.

He opined, Nigeria should elevate from the “politics of ethnicity” and adopt “politics of competence” for the progress of the country.

Obi said: “Nigeria is at a critical stage in its history, one that demands sacrifice, courage, and selflessness from all of us. The challenges we face, economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and declining public trust, require more than rhetoric.

“They require deliberate collaboration, disciplined leadership, and a shared commitment to national progress.”

He added: “We must move beyond the politics of division, ethnicity, religion, and region, and embrace the politics of competence, character, capacity, compassion, and commitment to a better Nigeria.”

Obi said, the “task” ahead of Nigerians “is about rebuilding institutions, restoring confidence in governance, and securing a better future for our children, not about winning elections alone”.

He called on all opposition members and every Nigerian that claims to be “patriotic” to take this “moment as a call for unity over division, service over self, and nation over personal interest”.
