Interim head coach, Michael Carrick, has suffered his first defeat as Manchester United were beaten 2-1 in the Premier League match against Newcastle United on Wednesday 4 March, 2026 at St. James’ Park, Westminster, Central London.
A beautiful strike from William Osula late handed Eddie Howe’s ten-man Magpies all three (3) points.
Newcastle United had to scale through the punishment of Jacob Ramsey being sent off after bagging a second yellow card to emerge victorious against a revamped United; the English midfielder was sent off after a clear dive following a challenge from Manchester United goalkeeper, Senne Lammens.
The win on home soil means the Magpies have successfully put to an end a run of three (3) successive home League losses.
In the 6th minute of first half additional time, English winger, Anthony Gordon, opened the scoring for Newcastle United from the penalty spot; the home side won the penalty from United Portugal international, Bruno Fernandes.
However, in the 9th minute of first half additional time, Manchester United levelled through Casemiro, converting Fernandes’ assist.
United, who were supposed to take advantage of Newcastle United’s numerical deficit, had themselves suffer pressure from their seriously determined hosts. It ended in Carrick carting his first setback as the Reds temporary manager.
The visitors did put goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale, who was picked ahead of Nick Pope, to the test; and the Englishman made crucial saves to help the Magpies stay in the game.
And in the 90th minute, Newcastle United’s resilience paid off when Osula converted Kieran Trippier’s assist to find the winner; Osula had barely fielded for the Magpies this season.
Despite the loss, Manchester United stay on the third spot with fifty-one (51) points, same points as Aston Villa, who are fourth after losing heavily to Chelsea 4-1 on Wednesday night at London Stadium in London, while, Newcastle United are 12th with thirty-nine (39) points; all after twenty-nine (29) games.
