Pope Leo XIV ‘sorrowful’ over recent attacks in Nigeria

Pope Leo XIV, Head of the Catholic Church and Sovereign of the Vatican City State, has expressed his “sorrow and concern” following the recent attacks in various parts of Nigeria.

The attacks have resulted to “heavy loss of life”, Pope Leo XIV, whose Papacy commenced on May 8, 2025, said.

The Pope prayed for all victims of “violence and terrorism” all over as he called on “competent” authorities to fight with “determination” to assure the “safety and protection” of life of all citizens.

Pope Leo XIV posted on X: “It is with sorrow and concern that I learned of the recent attacks against various communities in Nigeria leading to a heavy loss of life. I express my prayerful closeness to all the victims of violence and terrorism.

“I likewise hope that the competent Authorities will continue to work with determination to ensure the safety and protection of the life of every citizen.”

Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres, strongly condemned the recent attacks which happened in the North Central State, where over “100” people were reportedly killed.

The UN Chief expressed his “heartfelt condolences” to the families of the victims and the Nigerian government, and prayed “speedy recovery” to those who sustained injuries.

Antonio Guterres posted on X: “I strongly condemn the terrorist attack of 3 February, in Kwara State, Nigeria.

“My heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims & to the people & Government of Nigeria. I wish a speedy recovery to the injured.”

According to UN News, a statement by the UN Chief through his Spox reads: “The Secretary-General reiterates the solidarity of the United Nations with the Government and people of Nigeria in their efforts to fight terrorism and violent extremism and stresses the importance of bringing the perpetrators to justice.”

Following the recent attacks in the country, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has vowed to defeat all those who use terrorism as a tool to fight against Nigeria’s unity

Via a Press release after his meeting with Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq, Executive Governor of Kwara State, in Abuja, the President said: “We will protect our communities, defend our values, and defeat those who seek to divide us through terror.”
