Thirteen (13) people have lost their lives after a boat capsized at Guni, Shiro Local Government Area (LGA), Niger State.
The boat was loaded with thirty-nine (39) passengers and fifty (50) bags of rice from Shattai, Guni Ward in Munya LGA, en route to Kwatan, Zumba Market in Shiroro LGA.
Twenty-five (25) passengers and the boat driver were rescued; the 13 confirmed dead consists of, “8 women, 3 men and 2 children”.
Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Zubaida Umar, disclosed via X: “The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Minna Operations Office (MOO), has received a situation report from the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) regarding a tragic boat mishap that occurred on Saturday, 26th July 2025, at about 11:45 a.m.
“The incident involved a boat conveying 39 passengers and 50 bags of rice from Shattai, Guni Ward in Munya LGA, en route to Kwatan, Zumba Market in Shiroro LGA. Unfortunately, the boat capsized mid‑journey.
“The boat driver and 25 passengers were rescued, with one survivor currently receiving medical attention at the General Hospital, Kuta.
“So far, 13 fatalities have been confirmed consisting of 8 women, 3 men, and 2 children. 8 of the bodies have been recovered and buried, while 5 persons remain missing as search and rescue efforts continue.
“NEMA MOO is closely coordinating with NSEMA, local authorities, and community volunteers to support ongoing rescue operations.”
