‘Employers focusing on skills rather than degrees, you are better off learning a six-month to one year certification skill’ – Reno Omokri

According to Reno Omokri: “You can read many of the below listed obsolete vanity courses if you are the bored child of a wealthy oligarch, like DJ Cuppy. But, if you are a regular Joe in a third-world country, you should be aware that your nation does not need millions of students going to university to study:

Some people are upset because I did not list their university courses in my now viral post about relevant university degrees. But is it not better to be upset at the truth than to be seduced by a lie?

Yes, we could have a few thousand people read these courses. There is room for that. But when these courses occupy the bulk of your university spaces, it is a waste of time and money for the undergraduate their parents and the government who has to subsidise education.

It creates dependent graduates who leave school and expect their obsolete degrees to earn them a job. When one is not forthcoming, they blame the government for their unemployed status, as if the President sent them to read Philosophy, and point to countries like America and Canada.

Please fact-check me: If you read these courses in Europe and America, you are more likely to be employed at the same salary level as someone who completed secondary/high school.

“Many universities in the West are phasing out some of these courses because employers are increasingly focusing on skills rather than degrees. In many cases, if you do not have a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics degree, you are better off with a certification.

When they did a cost-benefit analysis, Harvard Business School identified something called ‘Degree Inflation’, whereby specific liberal arts, humanities and social sciences degree courses are facing criticism for not providing the necessary skills for modern jobs, thereby becoming obsolete.

Rather than join the tens of thousands that graduate from these courses every year to join the millions that graduated before them and have no job, you are better off learning a six-month to one year certification skill like:

AI and Automation

Blockchain

Care Worker

Catering

Cloud Computing

Coding

Cybersecurity

Data analysis

Ethical Hacking

Laboratory technology

Learning Java, JavaScript, Python, SQL, etc.

Machine learning

Nursing

Sales and marketing

Software Development

Web Design

Etc

Additionally, you can go for longer-term skills like

Air traffic control

Airline piloting

Merchant marine

Oil rig technician

Radiology

Stockbroking

Etc

I am saying this from a place of love. Always remember that the truth is bitter but better like butter and will matter more than any data.”
