Newcastle United struck out their 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy as they emerged victorious over holders Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley Stadium to win the Carabao Cup final.
The Magpies lifted the 1955 FA Cup final, however, their next five (5) final appearances (three FA Cup, two League Cup) had each ended in defeat – the last of which came in 2023, when they fell 2-0 to Man Utd in this very fixture.
A header from defender, Dan Burn, in the 1st minute of first half additional time, and a goal from Swedish forward, Alexander Isak, in the 53rd minute was enough for Eddie Howie’s side.

Federico Chiesa converted Harvey Elliot’s assist to score Liverpool’s goal in the 4th minute of additional time, but, it was not enough to help Arne Slot’s Liverpool find the leveller that would have sent the game to extra-time.
In his post-victory comments, Newcastle United manager, Howie, said: “We wanted to do the football club proud today. We are trying to break new ground and hopefully this is a turning point for us.
