Premier League: Aston Villa 1-1 Manchester City – Relief for Steven Gerrard as the Claret and Blue hold Citizens

Erling Haaland has equalled a Premier League record stretching back to 1992 after his tenth goal in six matches, and you sense there will be many milestones for the £51 million forward to shatter this season.

Haaland already has more goals than 14 clubs in the division but could have scored another hat-trick here, and it was those missed chances which allowed Aston Villa to claim a deserved point.

Defeat for Villa would have been a fifth from their opening six matches for the first time since 1986, but this was their best performance of the season and Leon Bailey’s equaliser will provide manager Steven Gerrard with encouragement.

Haaland’s hopes of claiming another matchball were frustrated by Villa’s goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who was outstanding and produced a number of crucial saves in the second-half.

City’s new No. 9 only touched the ball ten times in the first-half but did claim another goal for his collection, equalling a record set 30 years ago by Coventry forward Mick Quinn.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, in his post-match comments, said: “Erling was always involved in the game and he had the chances to score another one.

“Football is not just about Erling or Kevin, we had chances to score a second when the game was in our hands but we didn’t.

“I’m a positive person and you analyse every performance, now we have dropped four points away from home but we keep going. I know how difficult this league is.”
