As gathered, the facility has now been handed over to the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company Limited (NPDC).

Iyalla John-Jumbo, the Community Youth Leader, revealed to a local newspaper on Thursday in an interview, that the gas leak which happened on Saturday, 3 September 2022, has not been attended to by the facility owners.

According to Kristina Reports, an online news outlet based in Bonny, disclosed, when SPDC was contacted, the official who responded said he was not authorized to make comments on the issue.

However, he said the facility has been sold off to the NDPC, and then advised that the enquiry be redirected to the NDPC.

A staff of the NDPC who pleaded to be anonymous, said, a team has been mobilized and dispatched to the site to assess the situation of things and carry out necessary actions to arrest the problem.

The dejected Sangama Youth Leader said, the community has been deserted due to fears there might be a repetition of the 2020 Bonny gas leak which brought about loss of taste and smell in the community.

He pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari and Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, Chairman of Bonny LGA, Dame Anengi Wilcox, Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Mele Kyari and other stakeholders to force the NPDC to cease any further operation of the facility to halt any more impact of the gas leak within the area.
