Revival: Part 1 – Meaning? ‘…that thy people may rejoice in thee’

This topic ‘Revival’ will be served in parts because it’s really broad and cannot be forced into just one teaching. It won’t be wise to compress everything about ‘Revival’ in one part.

Revival - A Ministry of the Holy Spirit - Psalm 85:6
Revival – A Ministry of the Holy Spirit

This part will be about the Meaning of Revival.

Memory Verse: Psalm 85:6 – Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?

Text: Read (from beginning to end) Ezekiel 37

Here, the Almighty God showed His Omnipotence by raising dead and dry bones back to life. This is what I call Revival.

In verse 3, God asked Prophet Ezekiel “Son of man, can these bones live?” And he answered “O Lord God, thou knowest.” Ezekiel had no hope in those dead and dry bones, however, he did have hope in God.

In verses 4 and 5, God gave Prophet Ezekiel a task. Here, life is spoken into the dead and dry bones. The task God gave Ezekiel was “Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. This saith the Lord God unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and he shall live.”

The task continues in verse 6, and it says “And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know that I am the Lord.”

In verses 7 and 8, Prophet Ezekiel went ahead and executed the task God gave him, “So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone.  And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but there was no breath in them.”

Ezekiel had just finished executing the first task God gave him. However, it was not over as God gave him another task, this time to put the breath of life into the dead and dry bones that came together and grew “sinews”, “flesh” and “skin”. Sinews mean muscles, tissues, nerves and tendons.

In verse 9, God gave Prophet Ezekiel the second task, “Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith the Lord God ; Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.”

In verse 10, Prophet Ezekiel executed the second task given him by God, “So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army.”

Remember, inBiblical Loyalty – Part 1, I listed “Demanding” as one of the Characteristics of Biblical Loyalty, which means God will give you degrading and unthinkable tasks, that to the ordinary man will look very foolish, but anyone who claims to be loyal to God will not hesitate to execute the task because at the end of it comes “Rewards”, another characteristic of Biblical Loyalty.

This is a work of revival. Bringing back life to something that at one time had life. It was the restoration of life to something that was dead for long, and Prophet Ezekiel praying and asking the Holy Spirit to effect the miracle of re-creation, to breathe the breath of life into man’s nostrils.

And from verse 11, you will see how God explained everything that happened from verses 1 to 10 to Ezekiel.
