The game burst into life early in the second half, as City thought they had opened the scoring in the 53rd minute. Phil Foden fired a powerful shot from a tight angle that deflected off of Joe Gomez and into the net, but VAR spotted Erling Haaland tugging Fabinho’s shirt in the buildup and the goal was ruled out. Pep Guardiola was furious with the decision, as Anfield erupted all around him.
Thrilling end-to-end action ensued until Salah broke the deadlock in the 76th minute. With City players forward for a free kick, Alisson caught the ball and quickly sent it forward to Salah. The Egyptian forward neatly spun past Joao Cancelo and was clear through on goal, burying his shot past Ederson.
