Atletico Madrid defeated 10-man Barcelona 2-0 in the Uefa Champions League 2025/26 quarter final first leg on Wednesday 8 April, 2026 at Camp Nou.
The outcome means Diego Simeone’s Mattress Makers now have one foot in the semi finals of the tournament.
The stunning victory was inspired by former Manchester City forward, Julian Alvarez, when he opened the scoring just one (1) minute after the Catalans had lost a man after receiving a straight red card.
Atletico Madrid had not emerged victorious at the Camp Nou since 2006 until Wednesday, however, goals from Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth secured maximum points for the visitors.
The hosts were the ones mounting the pressure for much of the showdown, but, a foul by Pau Cubarsi on Giuliano Simeone before half time made way for the downfall of Hansi Flick’s side.
Atletico Madrid netted their first through Alvarez in the 45th minute. The Argentine beautifully sent the free-kick past the goalkeeper and into the net.
Barcelona went close to levelling when Marcus Rashford’s effort struck the crossbar from a free-kick.
The home side’s goal effort backfired when Atletico found their second goal through Norwegian striker, Sorloth, in the 70th minute, converting Matteo Ruggeri’s low cross.
The defeat mounts pressure on Flick’s Barcelona, who will now have to prepare themselves to burn a lot more energy when they lock horns with the Mattress Makers in the second leg next Tuesday at Metropolitano in Madrid.
