Former Governor of Kano, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has officially announced his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect.
Kwankwaso made the announcement via a Press Statement on Sunday 29 March, 2026, saying, the decision was “not easy” for him to make.
The former Minister of Defence, who served from 2003 to 2007, stated on X, he has found another Political Party that is offering the “best opportunity to effectively change the nation”.
Via a Press Statement titled ‘Resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP)’, signed by himself, Kwankwaso announced: “I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect.
“I seize this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the honour and privilege of serving as the Party’s National Leader and its Presidential Candidate in the 2023 General Elections. As a committed and bonafide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make.
“However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation.”
Kwankwaso, who served as Governor of Kano State from 1999 to 2003 and from 2011 to 2015, expressed his gratitude to the NNPP National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed and the National Working Committee (NWC) for their “steadfast support” all through his time, as well as, followers of the Kwankwasiyya Movement “for their dedication and commitment to our shared mission”.
He said: “We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation.”
Kwankwaso’s resignation from the NNPP is coming few days after former Governor of Anambra State and member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi, paid him a visit in Kano State.
