Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, Executive Governor of Adamawa State, has officially defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the governing All Progressives Congress (APC).
Fintiri, who was a member of the Adamawa State House of Assembly and served as Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, said on Friday 27 February, 2026 via X, his move from the ‘Umbrella’ Party was a “decisive step” for the future of the Northeastern State.
The Governor said, joining the ‘Broom’ Party came after “wide consultation”, adding, Adamawa has decided to go parallel with the APC to bring the State back to its rightful position in national politics, as well as, capitalize on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for “real gains”.
Finitiri, who is serving his second term as Adamawa Governor, made it clear that, he remains focused on the “2019 and 2023 mandate”, which he described as “sacred”.
Governor Fintiri said: “Today in Yola, I took a decisive step for Adamawa’s future.
“After wide consultation, we are aligning with the @OfficialAPCNg to return our state to the centre of national politics and leverage the Renewed Hope Agenda of @officialABAT for real gains.
“The mandate of 2019 and 2023 remains sacred. Platforms may shift; our covenant with the people stands.
“And we have moved, with our full political structure.
“Adamawa is back at the table.”
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri
Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, emerged Governor of Adamawa State since 2019, and is currently serving his second term. He served as Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly from October 2014 to June 2015.
He also served as Acting Governor of Adamawa from July 2014 to October 2014 following the impeachment of Governor Murtala Nyako in July 2014.
Fintiri scaled through the ranks to become Governor of Adamawa under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). After the State’s Gubernatorial election results were collated in March, 2019, Fintiri emerged winner with the highest number of votes.
He defeated incumbent Bindo Jibrilla of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
