Nigeria international, Ademola Lookman, recorded his name on the scoresheet as Atletico Madrid came from the back to clinch a 4-2 triumph over Espanyol on Saturday 21 February, 2026 in the La Liga 2025/26 match at Metropolitano in the city of Madrid.
After suffering consecutive defeats in the Spanish top flight, Diego Simeone’s Mattress Makers found their way back to winning ways with a beautiful come back victory over Espanyol on home ground.
Alexander Sorloth netted a brace to seal the comeback win over Espanyol in the game after the visitors had stunned their hosts with a very early lead.
Espanyol went in front through Jofre Carreras in the 6th minute, but, Sorloth levelled for the home side fifteen (15) minutes later with an assist from Marcos Llorente.
Llorente’s cross found Sorloth, who found the leveller for the hosts from the edge of the six-yard box.
Atletico mounted more pressure on their visitors and they had to wait until the 49th minute when they got rewarded with the second goal through Giuliano Simeone with an assist from Spanish midfielder, Alex Baena.
Simeone finished off a beautiful team move by placing through Marko Dmitrovic’s legs.
And Super Eagles of Nigeria forward, Lookman, who was unmarked, collected a fine cross from Matteo Ruggeri and converted with a stunning diving header in the 58th minute to hand Atletico Madrid the third.
Once again, Ruggeri had his name recorded on the assist sheet as he provided for Sorloth, who netted the fourth for the home side in the 72nd minute.
Edu Exposito found the back of the net for Espanyol in the 80th minute. The Spanish central midfielder scored after his shot deflected beyond Jan Oblak after Atletico were unable to deal with the corner.
Exposito’s goal was however unable to ignite a turn around for Espanyol in Madrid City.
Atletico Madrid have displayed their goalscoring prowess especially with the addition of former Atalanta forward, Ademola Lookman, in other compettiotins recently, but, in the La Liga, they had diminished in strength, falling in their last two (2) encounters.
On the other side, Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid were stunned 1-2 by Osasuna on Saturday in the top flight.
