Uefa Champions League: Bodo/Glimt humiliate Manchester City 3-1 in Norway

Bodo/Glimt, Norwegian Eliteserien Club, carted one of the most stunning upsets in the history of the Uefa Champions League by cruising past Premier League giants, Manchester City, 3-1, in the Arctic Circle cold.

The match which held inside the Aspmyra Stadion in Norway saw Spanish manager, Pep Guardiola, looking clueless as they fell three (3) goals to zero (0) inside sixty (60) minutes.

The showdown, which was featured on an artificial platform, had Guardiola’s boys freezing in the -9C temperatures as the English side conceded another embarrassing defeat following Saturday’s loss in the Derby to neighbours, Manchester United.

Michael Carrick led United to a beautiful 2-0 victory over the Cityzens in the English top flight match at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Bodo/Glimt, who deserved the win, opened scoring in the 22nd minute through Danish forward, Kasper Hogh, and in the 24th minute, Kogh added the second with Ole Didrik Blomberg providing both goals.

After the break, in the 58th minute, Jens Petter Hauge made it three for the home side, and two (2) minutes later, Ryan Cherki converted Nico O’Reilly’s assist to net a consolation for the visitors.

Hogh could have netted the third for the Norwegian side before the half-hour mark after sliding in at the far post, however, his effort on the stretch was stopped by goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Sharpshooter, Erling Haaland’s effort for the Cityzens could not find the target from eight (8) yards.

Hauge’s amazing solo effort, a fine curl into the top corner, ensured maximum points for Bodo/Glimt; while City reduced the deficit with Cherki’s goal, Rodri was sent off after being shown a second yellow card.

Manchester City will now need a victory against Victor Osimhen’s Galatasaray in their next League Phase match to finish in the top eight (8).

With this outcome, Bodo/Glimt have heightened their hopes of reaching the Play-off round.

The Uefa Champions League 2025/26 is Bodo/Glimt’s first appearance in the competition; ten (10) years ago, they were playing in the second tier of the Norwegian football.

They had not emerged victorious in any match since the tournament started until City came around on Tuesday night.

Bodo/Glimt had never claimed victory against an English club in their previous meetings, but, they put an end to that ugly run when they demolished Guardiola’s Manchester City on home soil.

The home side’s pace was inflicting so much problems on the visitors, and a low shot by Hakon Evjen was pushed out by Donnarumma; also the midfielder had an effort struck out for offside.

Manchester City’s annoying start to the year:

Manchester City finished 2025 with eight (8) victories bac-to-back, but, have won only two (2) from seven (7) games in the new year, 2026.

And, the former English Kings Have now suffered two successive defeats – Manchester United and Bodo/Glimt.

The Cityzens locked horns with Bodo/Glimt for the very first time on Tuesday 20 January, but, the trip turned into a disaster for the young and inexperienced City players.

The English side kicked off with a starting eleven (11) of an average age of twenty-four (24) years, the youngest side City has ever fielded in the Uefa Champions League, with individual errors recorded as young defender Max Alleyne error led to the first goal.

Manchester City currently looks like they have fallen off place in the race for the Premier League 2025/26 title as they are now seven (7) points trailing toppers, Arsenal.

The Cityzens fell far behind after losing to City rivals, United, at the Theatre of Dreams last weekend.
