Super Eagles forward Cyriel Dessers ‘ruled out’ of AFCON following thigh injury

Nigeria forward, Cyriel Kolawole Dessers, will not feature for the Super Eagles after sustaining a thigh injury, and has been “ruled out” of the Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) 2025, which is currently taking place in Morocco.

An injury update has revealed that the Greek Super League club, Panathinaikos, forward, has returned to Greece to recover at his Club.

The Super Eagles are gearing up for their knockout showdown against Mozambique on Monday 5 January, 2025 at 20:00 (WAT) at Fez Stadium in Fez.

While Nigeria qualified for the Round of 16 with a perfect record in Group C, winning all three games – 2-1 against Tanzania, 3-2 against Tunisia and 3-1 against Uganda, Mozambique finished third in Group F with three (3) points

An injury update on Dessers by the Super Eagles on X reads: “Cyriel Dessers has sustained a thigh injury and has been ruled out of the AFCON tournament. He has returned to his club to recover.

“Get well soon, Cyriel”

Cyriel Dessers was born in Belgium and fields for Greek Football Outfit, Panathinaikos. He joined the club in 2025 and has played five (5) games and scored twice.

He joined from Scottish Premiership club, Rangers, where he recorded more than seventy (70) games and scored more than thirty (30) goals.

Dessers will no longer continue with the Super Eagles in Morocco after a medical examination to determine the extent of his injury revealed the injury was serious; he alongside Ryan Alebiosu and Victor Osimhen missed Nigeria’s New Year Day’s training session.
