Premier League Club, Manchester United, and Portuguese head coach, Ruben Amorim, have parted ways on Monday 5 January, 2026.
Amorim, former Sporting CP manager, took charge of managerial duties at Old Trafford in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao, Spain in May.
Via an official statement, Manchester United said: “With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.
“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.”
Former Manchester United midfielder and the Club’s Under-18s manager, Darren Fletcher, will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday 7 January, 2026.
Fletcher, 41-year-old Scot, will take charge of managerial duties until a caretaker is appointed for the remainder of the season, with the club making plans to appoint Ruben Amorim’s permanent successor in the summer.
The former West Bromwich Albion midfielder fielded for more than twenty (20) years at the Theatre of Dreams and recorded over three hundred (300) appearance for the 20-time Premier League Champions.

Fletcher joined Manchester United at the very young age of eleven (11) and went ahead to win five (5) Premier League titles, two (2) League Cups, an FA Cup and the Uefa Champions League.
Out of sixty-two (62) games in charge at Manchester United, Amorim won twenty-four (24) and lost twenty-one (21).
After twenty (20) games, Amorim is leaving Manchester United on the 6th spot with thirty-one (31) points, same points as Chelsea, who also relieved manager, Enzo Maresca, of this managerial functions recently.
Both United and Chelsea are seventeen (17) points behind League toppers, Arsenal.
