Senegal discomfited Mali by a lone goal in the Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) 2025 quarter final match on Friday 9 January, 2025 at Grand Stade de Tangier, big thanks to Iliman Ndiaye’s strike in the first half.
Senegal scored the only goal of the encounter through Everton forward, Ndiaye, in the 27th minute.
His goal came from one of the nineteen (19) shots the Lions of Teranga launched off in an encounter which they dominated heavily.
Senegal’s opportunity to go two (2) goals in front was wasted by Substitute Pathe Ciss as he hit the ball straight at Mali goalkeeper Djigui Diarra with his side foot in the 76th minute.
And Lamine Camara put Diarra to the test again with a fine volley, which the Malian goalkeeper tipped onto the post.
In the 3rd minute of first half additional time, Mali Captain, Yves Bissouma, was sent off after the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder bagged his second yellow card after a haphazard foul.
Senegal will face the winner between Egypt and defending champions, Ivory Coast, in the semi finals.
Egypt will play against Ivory Coast in the quarter final match on Saturday 10 January, 2026 at 20:00 (WAT) at Le Grand Stade Agadir.
In the Round of 16, the Pharoahs and the Elephants defeated Benin 3-1 and Burkina Faso 3-0 respectively to reach the quarter finals of the tournament.
