Somaliland has called on Donald Trump, President of the United States (US), to follow Israel and formally recognize the Republic of Somaliland as a “sovereign nation”.
Via a Statement, Somaliland said, “now it’s America’s turn” after Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, officially recognized Somaliland a “sovereign and independent” State from the Republic of Somalia.
The call is coming after Senator Ted Cruz, representing the State of Texas, wrote the Trump administration to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent State.
Somaliland said, Trump’s official recognition of Somaliland will help “secure strategic ports, and reward a true ally in the fight against terrorism”.
The Republic of Somaliland wrote:
“Dear President @realDonaldTrump,
“Israel has just led the way by recognizing the stable, peaceful, pro-America democracy of Somaliland as a sovereign nation.
“Now it’s America’s turn! Follow the bold call from @SenTedCruz: formally recognize Somaliland, counter China in the Horn of Africa, secure strategic ports, and reward a true ally in the fight against terrorism. America First means standing with winners like Somaliland!
“U.S. @SenTedCruz (R-Texas), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Africa, sent a letter to President Trump urging the administration to formally recognize the Republic of Somaliland as an independent state.”
Despite African Union’s rejection of any recognition of Somaliland as an independent State, Netanyahu has gone ahead to announce, the State of Israel plans to bolster relations with Somaliland.
